Learn with Mom
Are you a Mom who wants to play?
A few years ago my 72-year-old mom asked if I had talked to my younger brother, who lives out of state, lately.
"Yes," I told her. "We talk on Discord while we play online games together."
Gaming has become one of the main ways I stay connected with the people I love. Even while my daughter was away at an out-of-state university, we could still log in, team up, and spend time together. I still regularly play with my loved ones: my daughter, my brothers, my school-aged niece and nephew, my partner, and my friends. Even when life gets busy, gaming gives us a reason to spend time together.
My mom thought about that for a moment and said something that stuck with me:
"I wish I learned how to play online games."
That's where the idea for Learn With Mom began.
She may not be raiding dungeons anytime soon, but she's now able to connect with us on Discord and has even enjoyed joining the family for some Jackbox party games.
Gaming isn't just for kids. It's not just for teenagers. It's not even just for gamers.
It's a way to connect.
Maybe your kids are always talking about Minecraft, Fortnite, Stardew Valley, or some other game you've never heard of. Maybe your grandkids live across the country. Maybe you've become a Call of Duty widow. Maybe you simply want to understand what everyone is talking about when they discuss gaming.
You don't need to become an expert. You don't need lightning-fast reflexes. You don't need to know all the gaming slang.
You just need someone willing to help you get started.
What I'll help with
Understanding gaming terminology
Setting up Steam, Epic Games, Battle.net, and other gaming accounts
Using Discord voice chat to connect with your loved ones
Installing and updating games
Learning gaming basics
Understanding online safety and privacy
Finding games to play with your family
Connecting with your family through the games they already play
Together we'll take gaming from something that feels intimidating to something that feels familiar.
Because sometimes the best way to connect isn't waiting for a phone call.
Sometimes it's joining the game.
